Maureen Steltman, Head of School
Mrs. Steltman was appointed Head of School in June 2008. She brings a wealth of experience to her role in leading the school—most recently as Fraser Academy’s Director of Development, where she established a successful development strategy, and as a member of the school’s executive leadership team, where she demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and management abilities. In addition to her managerial experience in an alternative-education environment, Mrs. Steltman brings to her position a personal understanding of the challenges that face students with language-based learning difficulties. Not only is she the parent of two Fraser Academy graduates, but Mrs. Steltman is also dyslexic herself. Not that this learning difficulty has ever held her back: Mrs. Steltman has an MBA from Royal Roads University and recently completed the Orton-Gillingham training.

As Mrs. Steltman says, “Dyslexia is only a disability if it stops you from doing what you want to do. The goal of Fraser Academy is to help empower our students to take charge of their challenges, find ways to compensate, and to go on to live fulfilling lives with meaningful work and relationships.”

Mrs. Steltman is a champion of the Orton-Gillingham multisensory approach and the personalized, one-to-one attention that have been successful learning tools for Fraser Academy’s many students past and present. This year she has also led the school through a study of best practices at institutions similar to Fraser Academy throughout North America. Under her capable leadership, the school has already begun to adapt many of these best practices into the 2009-2010 curriculum.
