INFORMATION FOR PARENTS & GUARDIANS REGARDING THE GRADE 8 TO 12 MALIBU CLUB RETREAT SEPT 13-16, 2010:
From Monday, Sept 13 to Thursday, Sept 16, students from grades 8 to 12 will be on a school retreat at Malibu Club, participating in a leadership and team-building program. The students will be accompanied by 25 staff members. Located 100 miles north of Vancouver, BC, Malibu is situated at the mouth of the world-renowned Princess Louisa Inlet. Surrounded by mountains soaring straight out of the water to heights of more than 800 ft, Malibu is a place of extraordinary beauty and isolation.
Please read the following information carefully, then complete the Fraser Academy registration/consent form and the Malibu Club registration form; return both to Ms. Maureen Belliveau by Friday, June 11, 2010.
ITINERARY:
Students will meet staff members at the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal to catch the ferry to the Langdon. Sechelt Bus Lines will then transport everyone to Egmont, where they will board the Malibu Princess for the 2-1/2-hour boat trip to Malibu. Students will spend three nights in cabins (8 to 14 per cabin, all-male or all-female, with staff members in adjoining rooms). Throughout their stay students will participate in a variety of team-building and recreational activities.
Please note that you are responsible for transporting your child to and from the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal. This retreat is also part of the school curriculum and attendance will be taken. Students not participating in this trip will be expected to attend school during this time.
Parents are to bring their child to the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal passenger ticket area no later than 8:45 am on Monday, Sept 13, 2010. Your child's travel schedule is as follows:

Parents are to pick up their child on Thursday, Sept 16 at 3:30 pm at Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal foot passenger area.

WHAT TO PACK:

Please note: Students may use electronic devices (cell phone, iPods, computers et al) on the ferry trips and bus rides only. All devices must be put away during the retreat. Any students using these devices during this time will have them taken away and returned upon departure from Malibu.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
- This trip involves travel to Malibu Club on the Princess Louisa Inlet, BC.
- Fraser Academy reserves the right to conduct a thorough baggage check at any time.
- Any violation of school rules carries the same consequences as if it had taken place at school.
- Safety is paramount. If a student endangers the safety of any member of the trip, he or she may be sent home.
- Please see "WHAT TO PACK" for details regarding required and prohibited equipment.
- If your child will be taking medication on this trip, it is advisable that he or she brings along either a replacement prescription or extra amounts (packaged separately) in case the original medication is lost. ALL MEDICATION MUST BE IN ITS ORIGINAL PACKAGING.
SAFETY:
- We will be bringing a first aid kit with us on this trip. There is also a first aid area at the camp and a medical doctor is at the camp.
- Malibu has a direct phone line.
- A contingency plan is in place in the evacuation for medical emergency purposes.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES:
Student safety is paramount. Fraser Academy has an excellent safety record, and we will not allow a student to participate in ANY activity that we consider unsafe. We ask that you carefully read the following section.
During the camp students will partake in a variety of outdoor activities as listed below.
- Swimming: All swimming takes place under the direct supervision of a certified lifeguard. Malibu is equipped with a swimming pool carved into the rock. Pool times are scheduled at specific times.
- Tubing, wakeboarding & waterskiing: Malibu has three tournament ski boats that are driven by Malibu staff members. Students wear life vests and helmets (tubing). A spotter is on the boat watching the students tubing and letting the driver know if anyone falls off the tube. A lifeguard is on the dock supervising students.
- Kayaking & canoeing: Students will have the opportunity to kayak and canoe on one of BC's
- High ropes course: Set at the foot of Mt. Albert, the high ropes course weaves through the trees of an old-growth forest and provides an opportunity for students to challenge themselves and develop self-confidence through success. The ropes course and its operators are certified each year by Adventure Experiences Inc.
- Zipline: Students, equipped with safety equipment, climb up into the treetops to be attached to a zipline that runs into the inlet below. Certified operators a nd staff are on hand to ensure the safety of each student.
- Aqua swing & blob: During waterskiing and boating activities, students can take part in the fun and challenging activity of the aqua swing. Students climb up into a crow's nest platform and try to lean as close to the water as possible. The blob is an inflated gigantic pillow object that floats in the water. A student sits at the end of the blob as another jumps into the blob to catapult the student at the end into the water. A lifeguard and staff are on had to ensure the safety of the students.
- Rock-climbing wall: The climbing wall has five climbing stations that can be used simultaneously. Each station has several routes available that provide challenges appropriate for all skill levels. A certified operator is on hand.
- Beach volleyball: The volleyball court will be open at a variety of times throughout the day. Staff members will be on hand to ensure safety.
- Gymnasium: Fraser staff and students will have access to a full-size gymnasium to play basketball, floor hockey or other group activities. The gym will only be used when staff members are present.
- Group activities: A variety of group team-building and leadership activities will be run throughout the camp. All activities are run by either Malibu Club staff or Fraser Academy staff.
Students will be given ample free time during the camp. However, students will NOT be permitted to stay in cabins during any free-time activity.
On this trip, students are expected to:
- Participate enthusiastically in all aspects of the program
- Keep cabin clean
- Listen to instruction given by both Fraser Academy and Malibu staff
- Abide by school and camp rules
- Treat all of the facilities and equipment appropriately and make sure that proper care of the gear is taken.
