final update
The team competed in (and hosted) the GVISAA Championships on Wednesday, October 17, at Jericho Beach Park on the National Cross Country Championship course (6K for Sr Boys, 4K for Jr Boys and Jr Girls). Twelve schools competed and the Hornets did very well. In Jr Girls, Jen Miles finished 4th (19:25) and Christina Shearer 6th (20:07). In Jr Boys, Logan Jones took 3rd place (18:05). The successful day was capped off with the Sr Boys race that saw Ben Morley-Senkler 3rd (25:32), Leith Robertson 5th (25:50), Jeremy Chandradas 6th (26:19), Ilyas Samad 7th (26:46), and Mitchell Pokrandt 8th (27:17). Gianfranco Di Salvo took a fall off the start line and had to drop out of the race. Congratulations to the team
The Zone Championships were on Wednesday, October 24. The day brought cold, windy and rainy conditions, but the Hornets were up to the challenge. In Jr Girls, Jen Miles lost her shoe on the first lap. She completed the 4K course with one shoe in outstanding fashion, posting a season best time of 19:25 (including the time to stop to pick up her shoe). Christina Shearer dropped her personal best to 20:02. Logan Jones was the lone Jr Boy in a competitive race, and posted a time of 18:44. The Sr Boys finished with 189 team points, not good enough for the Provincial Qualifying but a good team score nonetheless. Ben Morley-Senkler lowered his season best to 24:24, Jeremy Chandradas improved enormously with a time of 25:30, Ilyas Samad ran through a stomach cramp to finish in a time of 26:09 (another personal best) and Mitchell Pokrandt took a minute off his time with a 26:20. Gianfranco Di Salvo redeemed last week’s DNF, battling through ankle and stomach pain to finish in a time of 28:11. The Hornets had a great season and all their coaches are thanked for the time and efforts with the team. Enjoy the break and see y’all next season!
update #2:
The team continues to improve in their results! Ben M-S moved up to 24th place, and the rest of the team was within two minutes of him. The Sr team is chasing a strong Vancouver College team for a spot at the Provincial Championships in Prince George this November. Logan J joined the Jr team for his first race and set a high standard for himself to beat in the coming two races. The team looks forward to their next two big races: the GVISAA Championships and the Zone Championships.
update #1:
The Fraser Academy Hornets Cross Country season officially began on September 26 at Jericho Beach. West Point Grey Wolves hosted the first Lower Mainland Independent Secondary Schools Athletic Association's league meet, which includes St. George's, Vancouver College, York House, Crofton House and other independent schools. The first meet saw Leith R. leading the way for the Hornets with the rest of his teammates finishing within 2 minutes of each other. In the girls race, Jenn M. and Christina S. had strong races and are looking forward to upcoming races. Saturday, September 29 saw the team travel to Crescent Park in White Rock for Ocean Athletics "Festival of Cross Country." Again, the boys team finished close together while Jenn M. was the solo female runner as Christina S. is nursing an injury.
