what is the role of the school counsellor?
Fraser Academy's school counsellors provide support and resources to students, their families and to educators. Students and their parents can request counselling services in person, via email or telephone. The objective of Fraser Academy's Counselling Department is to handle student issues that can be resolved in five to seven sessions. After that, outside support is recommended. We do offer suggestions for professional services when requested.

This may involve developing insight into, and/or learning to prevent or eliminate concerning behaviors. Counselling may also help to the enhance and strengthen healthy coping styles and relationships with one's self and others. - adapted from http://bc-counsellors.org/general/about-us
We support students in a variety of ways. Some of the most common reasons that students receive counselling are listed below:
- Anxiety
- Stress
- Self-esteem issues
- Anger management
- Peer conflicts
- Effective communication
- Problem solving
- Personal growth
- Loss and grief
- Depressed mood

- Counselling is a confidential service between a student and counsellor and specific session information will not be released. However, the counselling office will liaise with parents to offer them a general understanding of their child’s wellbeing.
- Confidentiality does have its limitations as well. We will break confidentiality if there are safety concerns or if we are required to do so by law. These limits to confidentiality are told to students on an ongoing basis through a process of verbal informed consent.
- If students are experiencing a crisis or emergency, they should speak to a professional for assistance. During school times and hours, students can contact one of the school counsellors or any member of staff for assitance.
- We recommend that parents connect with outside support such as a counsellor or psychologist or emergency services if they have immediate concerns for their child outside of school hours and during school holidays.
Outside of school hours and on school holidays, students should talk to a trusted adult or contact:
