BC Ministry of Education Info Session

A summary of the psychologist information session with Kathleen Edge, BC Ministry of Education, and Sarah Howard, Fraser Academy, held Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010:

Twenty-four psychologists from across the Lower Mainland attended this workshop to discuss the recent changes to the adjudication process and the implications for independent schools.

Ms. Edge discussed in detail the fact that adjudication decisions are now made at the school/district level, and that the way in which these decisions are determined is based on ministry criteria outlined in Chapter 7 of the 2009-2010 Handbook of Procedure. She also talked about the impact the changes to the adjudication process has had on independent schools.

Ms. Howard provided the independent school perspective—that these changes are an excellent opportunity to work more closely with other professionals in the field of special education, especially within the private education system and with private psychologists. Her information was based on direct experience of the adjudication process at Fraser Academy, as well as from educators at 45 private schools across the Lower Mainland, who attended a workshop in Oct. ‘09 with Ms. Edge and Ms. Howard to discuss the Ministry of Education changes.

The 24 psychologists at this workshop provided valuable feedback on ministry procedures and psycho-educational report writing, while five psychologists volunteered to be part of an ongoing process with the ministry as new forms are developed to help schools and professionals become more independent moving forward.

Fraser Academy plans to host and provide continuing workshops as part of its commitment to the independent school community, the Ministry of Education and professionals working in the field of special education.
